Everybody loves Cades Cove! They have been closed for a little while, making some improvements, but they are opening again soon! Not only will they be reopening earlier than planned, but they will also be having a Re-Opening Celebration!
The Re-Opening Celebration will consist of two special events. On Saturday, April 24 (the new opening day!) a Field Day has been planned, when only bicycles and pedestrians will be allowed on the road until noon! Traditionally, the Loop Road has only been available to bicycles and pedestrians until 10am each Saturday and Wednesday from early May through September. They have extended this event until noon on opening day to accomodate the anticipated greater number of visitors!
On Sunday morning, April 25, there will be a one-time-only “Cades Cove Loop Lope”, being planned by the Park, and Friends of the Smokies. This event will offer pre-registered runners a chance to race on either the 11 mile loop or a 3.5 mile loop course. “Historically the Park has declined requests to permit foot and bicycle races in the Cove, due to the heavy visitation that Cades Cove attracts and the knowledge that events of this nature would be very popular” and could plug up the area for other visitors. But Park managers, in partnership with Friends of the Smokies are excited to present this one-time opportunity to foot race on the Loop in honor of the first major facelift that the Loop Rd has had since 1978! The race will begin at 8am so that the road can be re-opened to vehicles by noon. It is expected that participants will have to pre-register, and the event fee will go toward a wide variety of Park programs! For more information, visit the Friends of the Smokies website!
