This Saturday, April 16, 2011, Gatlinburg will host the Fourth Annual Mountain Man Memorial March. This great event, featuring the theme, “Support the Future, Honor the Past,” is a 26.2 mile march to honor our men and women in uniform and raise money for today’s veterans. %20 of all proceeds, and 100% of collections taken the day of the event and at fund drives held prior to the event will be donated to selected Veterans’ Charities in honor of 1LT Walkup, in whose honor this event was started and continues to be held.
”The Mountain Man Memorial march was created to honor one of our fallen UT alumni, 1LT Frank Walkup who was killed in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position. The 2005 graduate was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division and was a Ranger School Graduate. The event has now grown to a tribute which honors all of our fallen American Heroes and Veterans, past, present, and future.”
The event begins with a ceremony to honor Gold Star mothers, held the evening of Friday, April 15, 2011 at 8pm at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies. On the Day of the Race, the Opening Ceremony is at 8:30 am in the Harley Davidson Parking lot, across the street from the Hard Rock Cafe. The runner’s portion of the race begins at 9:00am, and the walker’s portion of the rave begins at 9:03am. The closing ceremony will be held at 8:00pm, in which all the winners of the different categories will be recognized, and prizes awarded.
“The Run portion of the event consists of three events. The full 26.2 mile marathon, a 13.1 half marathon and a 10 Km run. The run events are divided into categories based on gender and age.
The March portion of the event has two distances the full 26.2 mile distance and the 13.1 mile 1/2 distance. The event can be completed as an individual or as part of a five person team.
