So at first thought, a plastic shark race in the little river that runs through Gatlinburg sounds ok… even cute maybe, but not really especially exciting. But when I look again… This is one of the most exciting events this summer!
First of all, this is an annual event held in Gatlinburg to raise money for the Sevier County United Way. This is a wonderful organization that provides much-needed assistance to struggling families in our area!
The shark race begins on Saturday, July 30, at 3pm. Little plastic sharks will be dumped into the Little Pigeon River at Christ in the Smokies Museum and Gardens bridge on River Road. The shark that crosses the finish line at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies will win a 5-Day Carnival Western Caribbean Cruise (includes airfare from Knoxville to Miami, taxes, gratuities & room upgrade). Other prizes will be awarded, including $1,000 Food City Gas Card, Apple Ipad, 6-Night Lodging Package (cottage/chalet/cabin), and a VIP Amusement Package for Six to Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Area Attractions.
Fun, sun, and prizes, and all for a great cause! Are you excited yet?! Maybe you are bummed because you really wanted to enter a shark in the race, but you can’t be here on the 30th. No sweat! You can purchase a ticket to enter a shark online through PayPal, and you don’t even have to be in attendance the day of the race to win! I know you are wondering…. “So can I buy about 10 of these tickets and enter 10 sharks in the race to up my chances of winning?” Of course!
Check out this Mtn. Press article prior to last year’s event for the sharks’ perspective on the race! 🙂
