Smoky Mountain Field School 2012

Smoky Mountain Field School

On your next Gatlinburg vacation head to our outdoor classroom in Great Smoky Mountains National Park! For the past 34 years, the National Park has partnered with the University of Tennessee forming the Smoky Mountain Field School.

The Field School offers high-quality workshops, hikes, and adventures for students of all ages who want to enhance their enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of the Smokies and the great outdoors.

Most of the courses take place during the warmer months, but they start in early Spring! The very first 2012 workshop will be Introduction to Orienteering, on March 10. Orienteering is the process of using a map and compass to travel from one place to another. Through lectures, classroom activities, and field exercises, you’ll learn the fundamental skills of both competitive and wilderness orienteering.

Salamander! In addition to adult classes, The Field School also offers Family Programs. On Saturday, March 31th, bring your family to Cades Cove to join Elizabeth Domingue for Polywogs, Eggs, and Singing Frogs. Help search for Spotted Salamander and Wood Frog eggs, tadpoles, and salamanders! Get a close-up look at the three stages of amphibian development and learn more about frogs and salamanders!

Incredible Edibles and Traditional Medicinals is a popular course that is offered several times every year. Spend a day discovering how to identify plants and trees Native Americans and early settlers used for dye, food, medicines, crafts, and other items of daily life. Sample delicious wild flavors appropriate to the seasons. This course is offered several times each year, as different plants are available during different seasons. I have heard great reviews for this class, Wildflowers!and I think I might take it this year. The first class is June 9th.. It will offered again in August, September, and October.

If any of these courses sound like fun, then download the course catalog or pick up a copy at Sugarlands Visitor Center.
